Sonshine Ministry

The King will answer them, "I can guarantee this truth.
Whatever you did for one of my brothers or sisters,
no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me."

-- Matthew 25:40

Vern Hatfield started the Sonshine Ministry after healing from a bad car wreck. She believes that God allowed this in order for Him to reveal how other people feel in the same situation . . . not being able to get around, stuck at home, lonely, depressed, dependent on others for everything, etc.

Her experience helped her relate to people who are homebound, bedridden, and in need of uplifting, laughter, assistance, and just plain friendly companionship.   We couldn’t ask for a better friend than Jesus is to us, so we want to strive to be like Him and be friends to others.

God laid it on Vern’s heart to start a ministry that would reach out to people in need whether they are home-bound, in hospitals, in nursing homes, or in need of a friend. The "Sonshiners" seek to bring some of God's light to what, at times, can be a dark, lonely place.

The folks in the Sonshine Ministry also have the wonderful opportunity to share with people who have not encountered Jesus in their lives or have been away from Him a while or just need prayer and encouragement.

The Sonshiners have monthly planned events, but are always open to needs that arise along life’s journey. Here are some of the things we are involved in:

  • Helping bear the needs of others through providing meals or other needs to those who are ill, have had surgery or are grieving the lose of a loved one. (to find out more or become involved in this area of ministry, please click on the Lotsa Helping Hands logo above)

  • Making and distributing "prayer" bears to give out on visits.

  • Sending cards of encouragement and get well cards from time to time.

  • Making and delivering baskets of food for the various waiting rooms at Vanderbilt Hospital.  When you are there with a loved one, especially in the trauma unit, you don't want to leave to go out and eat.  This is a way of providing nourishment for the bodies of attending friends and families.  The baskets always include "Daily Breads" to read for nourishment of the soul.  On delivery days, we go from waiting room to waiting room and sometimes into the patient rooms to pray with and for people in need of God's healing power.

  • Visitng nursing homes.  We visit various nursing homes in the Wilson and Smith County areas.  We pray for needs, spread the Word and visit with residents and staff alike.  Sometimes we have little parties for the residents (Last year we had an Elvis party and an Elvis impersonater came and sang.  The folks at the nursing home enjoyed it so that they all wanted their pictures taken with him!)

  • Reaching out to the community.  This is new to our ministry, but we are so excited about it.  We are taking clothing, music, food, the Good News of Jesus, and lots of love to areas in our community that are in need of just about everything.

  • Visiting Veterans' Hospitals.  We make camouflage prayer bears for these visits.  We pass out the bears, thank our service men and women for serving our country and for fighting for our freedom.  We also pray for their needs and tell them all about Jesus.

  • Volunteering at Joseph's Storehouse.  This is a local nonprofit organization that collects and passes out food to those in need every month.  When we can, we help distribute the food or counsel with individuals in need.
